If you are interested in sport enough to make it a central part of your career then this one-year course is an excellent first step.
What goes well with this course?
This course is diverse and covers a range of sport-related topics including the anatomical, psychological and sociological aspects of Sport. This means a wide range of subjects work well with Sport, including:
- Applied Science
Achieving this qualification indicates that students can apply concepts and interpret practical situations. It will provide them with a strong grounding for further study at Coulsdon Sixth Form College in a BTEC Level 3 Programme in Sport or other subjects.
It is a one year course and the equivalent of one GCSE grade A* to C.
You will study one core unit:
- Fitness for sport and exercise
and six selected units including topics such as:
- Leading sports activities
- The mind in sports performance
- Practical sports performance
Course Specific Trips, Visits & Experiences
The College offers a number of educational experiences each year to enable students to contextualise their learning. These experiences include visiting speakers, an assault course, a stadium tour, a team-building paintball experience and a visit to university sports science labs.
Any full time student at Coulsdon Sixth Form College can apply to join one of the two College's Football Academies, run by Redhill Football Club or Fulham Football Club. The Academies allow students to fulfill their sporting aspirations, with the hope of developing a career in football, either through playing, coaching or officiating.
The Academy offers you:
- Elite coaching, with highly trained coaches
- Guidance and knowledge on developing individual fitness programmes
- Access to the College Fitness Suite
- Advice on nutrition and healthy living
- The chance to play in National competitions
- Coaching and officiating qualifications
- Opportunities to play and coach at Redhill Football Club or Fulham Football Club
In addition to the Football Accademy there are many other opportunities for students to develop their sporting prowess. A variety of external coaches are employed to lead sport-specific training sessions and a new strength and conditioning programme designed to develop phyiscal literacy 'ABC' was launched in September 2014. The College has excellent links with a variety of local sports clubs.
The course is assessed through coursework worth 75% and an online exam worth 25%.
Students will begin to work on their analytical skills, through self analysis, which they will build upon if they choose to continue to study Sport at BTEC Level 3.
The exam board for this course is Peason BTEC.
2 D and 3 E grades at GCSE including English and Maths minimum Grade 2 or equivalent qualifications (a Pass or higher at BTEC Level 2 is accepted as part of the 2 D and 3 E GCSEs).
Students must be interested in and committed to a wide range of sports and also be keen to study Sport in-depth. Students should be willing to take part in practical activities and be able to work with others.
