The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Diploma in Art & Design (Fashion) encourages an experimental approach to Art and Design with an emphasis on Fashion.
Students will undertake assignments in the first year that will explore different aspects of fashion and textiles. In the second year students will focus on a specialist area such as fashion or costume design, fashion accessories or surface pattern design.
The course can either be taken as a one year course leading to an Extended Certificate (equivalent to one AS Level) or as a two year course resulting in a Diploma (equivalent to one A Level).
Students complete skills-based project work for three units in the first year, progressing on to three specialist units in the second year, some of which will be externally set.
What goes well with this course?
BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Diploma in Art (Fashion) is a time consuming course. Students could combine this course with Photography, Graphic Design or Fine Art AS/A Level, but are advised to only choose one of these subjects.
Many students go on to study at Art College or university and do courses including:
- Fashion design, styling and promotion
- Theatre Design
- Fashion Photography and Journalism
- Foundation course in Art and Design
Fashion is one of the most competitive of the creative industries – to gain employment students need to be highly qualified, talented, original and extraordinarily hard-working. This course will support students to develop these skills rapidly but the hard work has to be done by them.
This is not a dress-making course. It is primarily about ideas, communication and design although students will be expected to construct garments and costumes as part of some assignments. Having access at home to a sewing machine and a digital camera will be an advantage and students will need a full range of art and design equipment and be prepared to buy consumables as necessary to fulfil the assignments.
The course covers areas such as:
- Being an open-minded and experimental artist
- Improving drawing skills
- Working in both 2D and 3D
- Learning new skills and working to set briefs and deadlines
- Experimenting with resources, media, techniques and processes while reviewing and refining ideas
- Printing and digital design
- Constructing original outcomes

The exam board for this course is Pearson BTEC.
