This BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (which is equivalent to three A Levels) can be combined with another BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate course or A Level or taken on its own. The course equips students with in-depth knowledge from a wide selection of areas within the creative field. Students will achieve the Foundation Diploma in the first year. The course structure can allow the qualification to be flexible to meet learners' interests, abilities and aspirations.
Students are asked to make a £30 contribution towards materials at the beginning of each year and are expected to have their own drawing and painting materials for use at home.
The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design builds and develops the necessary techniques and attitudes to begin a successful professional career, or move on to further study. It gives an understanding of the employment opportunities available in the Art and Design world so that students can progress into a specific area of work after completing an Art Foundation course or specialist degree.
For the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, there are seven mandatory units, plus six optional units from a range of professional specialist areas including Fine Art, Graphic Design, Textiles and Photography.
For the BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma, there are four compulsory core units and two optional units.
Students will contribute to the course Blogs, Youtube and Flickr pages as well as build their own e-portfolio. Upper Sixth students hang and host a public exhibition at the end of their course.
The essential elements of the course give students a comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of Art and Design - techniques and materials, concepts and influences, visual recording and communication - which allow them to eventually specialise in an area of their choice.
Course Specific Trips, Visits & Experiences
The College runs a number of educational experiences each year to enable students to contextualise their learning. These experiences include trips to galleries, outdoor drawing opportunities and photoshoots, external competitions, participation in a local craft fair and talks by visiting speakers, including a variety of local designers and artists.
Four units are externally assessed over the 2 years, the rest is coursework. The points achieved on each unit will be added together to form an overall grade.
The exam board for this course is Pearson BTEC.
