BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business

Overview

This is a practical course that looks at real life situations and allows students to develop the skills and knowledge required in a modern day business. Students will study topics such as Marketing, Finance and Personnel by relating them to case studies of actual businesses and the problems they experience.

Progression

This course will prepare students for a degree or employment in Business Studies, Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or more general higher education courses. Increasingly, many students go on to do  trainee management courses or apprenticeship schemes within companies in order to gain the skills, understanding and experience required for long term careers in business and related areas.

The 2 year Extended Diploma course (which is equivalent to 3 A Levels) covers a wide range of business topics including:

  • Business Ethics

Educational Experiences

Course Specific Trips, Visits & Experiences

The College runs a number of educational experiences each year to enable students to bring their learning to life. These experiences include trips and visiting speakers.

Students have the opportunity to participate in a two day business event based on the 'Dragons Den' TV programme. This is run by an external consultant and is a great opportunity for students to develop their teamwork and entrepreneurial skills.

Assessment

This course is assessed by 75% coursework and 25% exam. Students will complete a total of thirteen units of which, seven are mandatory. There are four external assessments, one exam and three set tasks. The points achieved on each unit will be added together to form an overall grade. 

The exam board for this course is Pearson BTEC.

Entry Requirements

Students wishing to do BTEC Level 3 courses, need to have (or expect to achieve) at least four GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above including English and Mathematics (a Merit or higher at BTEC Level 2 in the same subject is accepted as part of the 4 A* - C GCSEs).

Students will enjoy this course if they:

  • Prefer coursework
  • Like doing presentations and pitches
  • Would like to develop an understanding of how businesses work
  • Are able to complete independent research

Students should have a general interest in how businesses work. They should also be comfortable with ICT and enjoy group work, problem solving, presentations, working with numbers and meeting deadlines.
