In to the Dragon's Den

We are breeding Business Dragons of the future here at Coulsdon College.  Business BTEC Diploma students have taken part in a 2 day Dragons Den project run by business training organisation, Business Smart.

10 teams of students had to create a product or a service from scratch and develop a business plan including production, finance, operations and marketing.  Then came the hard part of presenting it to a team of Dragons with the aim of persuading them to invest in their idea.

The winning team presented ‘Future Portal to your Career’ which is a service linking students with potential employees.  Business student Edyta Jaworska explains, “Our unique service helps students with their CVs and interview techniques giving them the best opportunity to succeed.  We provide a service to businesses by identifying the best candidates for their vacancy.”

The team’s CEO, Michael Samaro, who is studying for his BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Business, described the gruelling process.  “It was all quite pressurised as we had to do everything really quickly, making decisions about the service we were going to provide, how we were going to deliver it, not to mention decisions about who would take responsibility for what within the group.  It felt like a really good real-life experience though, working as a team under pressure.  The Dragons really interrogated us very thoroughly, so we had to be really well prepared.”

Don Seabright, Head of Vocational Business at the College concluded that the event was a tremendous success. “Our students worked very hard in presenting their ideas in a pressurised environment which gave them an opportunity to put all their theory into practise and get a real feel for what it’s like out there in the business world.  This year’s students will act as mentors at next year’s event, giving the benefit of their experience to the younger students.”
