BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Music (Technology)

Overview

The Music Industy is a vibrant, dynamic industry to work in.

The BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Music (Technology) is equivalent to two A Level so students tend to take it with one other Level 3 course. 

Many students who do well on this course go on to work in related jobs, either taking up trainee positions direct from College or after acquiring higher level degree qualifications.  

Students go into careers such as Music Management, Production, Teaching and Performance.

Progression

Students could take this course to prepare for degree courses in Music or more general higher education courses, as the course develops skills that are useful in lots of subjects.

With further training students could go into a job directly related to Music such as a Sound Engineer, Audio Technician, Musician, Music Therapist or Teacher of Music.

The course will also help students develop the skills, understanding and knowledge for entering today's workforce across many industries. 

Course Content

The Level 3 Diploma course is made up of twelve units. The core unit in Studio Production, forms part of a major project which counts as two units and culminates in students producing an industry standard album.

The specialist units enable students to study particular areas in depth, such as music video, music freelance world and sound creation and manipulation.

There will be specialist units on live sound where students will be the sound technician for students on Music courses.

 

Educational Experiences

Course Specific Trips, Visits & Experiences

The Department organises a variety of trips which include visits to: Perfomance Showcases, SoundExpo Show, and presentations by guest speakers and performers from the industry.

Students have the opportunity to support Music Performance students by managing the technical aspects of two performances at music venues outside College.

Assessment

The course is assessed by 100% coursework, including portfolios, journals, audio and video evidence, presentations, accounts and evaluations.

The exam board for this Level 3 Diploma is Pearson BTEC.

Entry Requirements

Students wishing to do BTEC Level 3 courses, need to have (or expect to achieve) at least four GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above including English and Mathematics (and a satisfactory school reference) in order to be accepted on a BTEC Level 3 Programme.

Students should have previous experience of making or producing music and a passion for the music creation process. They should also have basic keyboard skills, which will help with MIDI-sequencing, which is an integral part of the studio production process.

Students are required to audition.

Students will be asked to bring examples of music they have produced or recorded to their interview.
