Business – BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Business


This is a practical course that will give students the opportunity to complete assignments and activities based on real-life situations linked to a variety of well-known businesses. The course is enhanced by external visits, which provide students with the context for their work. This course is assessed through coursework, which includes presentations, role play and other practical elements, as well as traditional business formats, plus an exam. The course aims to provide students with the independent working and communication skills necessary for both employment and further education.

The Diploma is equivalent to two A Levels and attracts UCAS points enabling many students to progress to university.

Course Content

This course covers mandatory units of study such as:

Year one

  • Exploring Business
  • Developing Marketing

Year two

  • Personal & Business Finance

Optional units include:

  • Recruitment and Selection
  • Customer Service

The College runs a number of educational experiences each year to enable students to bring their learning to life. These experiences include trips and visiting speakers.


Business Studies graduates are in growing demand in a variety of fields, including Accountancy, Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and Banking. A qualification in Business can help set students apart from other applicants and provide them with essential knowledge that will help prepare them for employment.

Entry Requirements & Assessment

Students wishing to do BTEC Level 3 courses, need to have (or expect to achieve) at least four GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above (a Merit or higher at BTEC Level 2 in the same subject is accepted as part of the 4 GCSE passes).

Students will enjoy this course if they:

  • Prefer coursework
  • Like doing presentations and pitches
  • Would like to develop an understanding of how businesses work
  • Are able to complete independent research

Students should have a general interest in how businesses work. They should also be comfortable with ICT and enjoy group work, problem solving, presentations, working with numbers and meeting deadlines.

This course is assessed through coursework. Students are required to complete mandatory units. The points achieved on each unit will be added together to form an overall grade.

The exam board for this course is Pearson BTEC.
