Learner Improvement Programme

The Learner Improvement Programme (LIP) has been designed to provide support for individual students who can work independently but would benefit from working in a supervised environment.

The LIP provides timetabled support sessions for students who are failing to meet coursework deadlines or falling behind with their studies for health or personal reasons. Once this level of intervention has been identified by a teacher or tutor, clear targets are set and the LIP department agrees a weekly timetabled slot with the student.

Students must then attend their session in the LIP suite in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), just as they would for a subject lesson. All the sessions are supervised by an ILC Learning Facilitator and students are expected to arrive with any necessary books or equipment, and register as for a normal class.

The sessions are intended to provide students with:

  • time and space to complete homework, coursework projects, catch up on work missed or to revise for tests and exams
  • access to an adult supervisor (LRC Learning Facilitator) who can help them find and use resources to support their work
  • support in developing individual skills to manage, organise and present work in their subject area
  • general support in order to meet specific targets set by the student’s referring subject teacher

The parent(s) / guardian(s) of students referred on to this programme are notified by letter and the student’s progress is regularly monitored and reviewed.

Most students find their LIP sessions very valuable and use them to make positive progress in their chosen courses.
