Supported Education Programme

Course Overview

Our Supported Education programme is for young people with disabilities, learning difficulties and/or health conditions to transition from school into their adult life.

The programmes are designed to promote confidence, independence, the acquisition of life skills and a real sense of community understanding and belonging. They focus on the individual young person and what they can achieve to improve their outcomes and prepare themselves for further transition.

Course Highlights

We offer a broad, balanced and rich curriculum which is designed to develop communication , independence, personal and social skills, emotional regulation, physical development, life skills and work skills. Our framework places the young person at the centre and ensures that the curriculum’s content and learning experiences are tailored to meet individual needs.  We offer 2 courses which are tailored to meet individual students’ needs:

LIFE SKILLS COURSE

Life Skills is a course for young people with a range of learning difficulties who are likely to have high support needs on entry and will develop the skills to become more independent as they progress through the course. The course will prepare students for adulthood by enabling them to gain the maximum possible degree of independence in their daily lives. Key features of the course includes:

  • Sensory approach to learning
  • Holistic integrated programme
  • Independent living skills -use of money, shopping and cooking
  • Improve health and wellbeing – personal safety awareness and how to lead a healthy lifestyle
  • Develop self-advocacy skills. social skills, build relationships, organise and take part in leisure activities
  • Access to the community and travel training
  • Learn about work through Social Enterprise projects

 

INTO WORK COURSE

The Into Work course will prepare students for adulthood by focussing on developing the skills needed for the world of work, with added opportunities for developing independence, community and social skills. Key features of the course includes:

  • Students have the opportunity to gain a LASER qualification (certificate or award)
  • Explore the world of work and develop work-readiness skills Vocational tasters in college
  • Work experience in college and / or in wider community
  • Access to the community and travel training Personal safety awareness and how to lead a healthy lifestyle
  • Develop social skills, skills to build relationships

 

Careers and Further Opportunities

Once students have developed their academic skills and are able to study in a mainstream environment they may go on to further study at Croydon College.  Alternatively, students may be supported into employment or to employment related services, or move into Adult Social Care.

Progression

This course allows learners who are unsure which vocational route they would like to pursue as a career, to experience a variety of courses across the college i.e Music, Art, Hair & Beauty, Culinary skills, Construction & Plumbing whilst giving them the opportunity to improve their English, Maths, ICT and Employability Skills.

Elements of the course can be used to filter into one of our personalised programmes. These strands are suited to individual needs and can include a variety of combinations of vocational elements and units.

When a young person is ready to move on to adult living there is a joined up approach between the young people, their carers, the team at the Pathway Centre, Waddon and social care, plus other professionals who may be involved.

 

Assessment

Before the start of the academic year, we carry out an initial assessment by meeting parents/carers, schools and the student.  The first six weeks of the academic year is a baseline assessment period where a thorough assessment takes place to evaluate the students’ strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills.  Following this period of baseline assessment, an individual learning plan is put in place for each student.  These plans have targets which are updated on a term-by-term basis.

Regular progress meetings are held to review each student’s achievements.  

The Pathway Centre will hold a multi-disciplinary meeting each term which will include representatives from the wider professional team e.g. speech and language therapist, visual impairment specialist teacher, auditory teacher, the Waddon Centre.

 

Entry Requirements

There is no specific entry criteria; each candidate is considered on their individual needs identified in their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
