St Mary’s University was the destination for the super keen, super fit BTEC Level 3 Sports student on 1 December, where they took part in a series of physiological laboratory tests.  The trip, which is part of their current study unit on the Physiology of Fitness, proved to be extremely informative, not least about their level of fitness.

Lower Sixth student Massimo Blair explains: “We learnt what an incremental sub-maximal cycle ergometer test was!  It measures your aerobic endurance.  We all had a go at that, followed by a Wingate test to measure our power.  Of course we were all very competitive, especially as we had an opportunity to compare our performances with top level cyclists like Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins.  Whilst we are all very active and competitive people, we still have a way to go before we get to their standards.”

Massimo can be seen testing himself to the max, with the support of his fellow students here
