Girls on Cousdon College’s BTEC Level 3 Sport courses attend a Women in Sports Media Day this week, a conference organised by the University of Brighton and Sky Sports.  Industry professionals offered  hands-on insight into sports media careers such as TV presenting, reporting, commentary, PR and digital production.

After a keynote speech from Sky’s Sportswomen Executive Producer Anna Edward, the girls took part in a range of workshops in digital media production, radio presenting, TV presenting, PR and reporting.  Jo Wilson, presenter from Sky Sports News led a session where the students had a go at presenting a Sky Sports News style news report in front of the cameras.  Students were also given some advice on radio presenting from Faye Curruthers who is a radio presenter on Absolute Radio who has previously worked for Talksport.

BTEC Sports student, Hanna Bartram found the event inspirational.  “In the digital media production workshops, we were set a brief of creating a social media campaign to promote Sky Sports using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.  This session was led by Sian Parry who is in charge of digitial media production and is the football planner for Sky Sports News.  It was a great experience and I am now thinking about pursuing a career in sports media, although not necessarily front of camera!”

Fellow BTEC Sports student, Hannah Lucy however, was a natural in front of the camera.  “I loved it.  The adrenalin helped me to cope with the pressure of knowing exactly what to say and how to look.  I think I may have just found my future career.”
