Science, SociologyHow did you decide which subjects to study?
I did a year in the sixth form at my old school, but realised that I was doing the wrong courses for what I wanted to do. I want to be a physiotherapist and you have to have science subjects, particularly Biology to do that. I subsequently didn’t do very well, so decided to start again.
What does Medical Science involve?
It’s the perfect course for what I want to do. We do Biology, Physics and Chemistry, but it’s all biased towards the body and medicine and has given me a detailed understanding of the application of science to real situations in the workplace. The module on physiology and anatomy was particularly interesting. It’s a very practical and research based course, so I find it much easier to remember the facts.
What kind of further education will you need to become a physio?
I’m going to apply to do a Physiotherapy degree at St George’s Hospital in Tooting. I’ve been writing my personal statement for this and I’m lucky to have had some physio work experience, working in a poly clinic and in a special needs school.
Are you confident you will get the grades required?
I’m getting excellent grades, with the help of my teachers. The support here is amazing; the teachers never seem to be off duty and run extra workshops at lunchtime, to help support us with our work and to make sure we keep on task.
What’s the biggest difference between College and school sixth form?
In college we are treated like adults. We call the teachers by their first names, which took a bit of getting used to, but it creates a real atmosphere of mutual respect.
