Congratulations to our BTEC Level 3 Law students, Chaneille Gaynor and Tyra Harris who have been selected to take part in the Big Voice London’s Mooting Competition in association with the Supreme Court.

Students are paired up with Bar Professional Training Course students, who act as ‘Mooting Mentors’ and they have to prepare for and execute mock trials, enabling them to  experience court advocacy, and helping them to develop their knowledge of the law and their communication skills with the help of those already pursuing a career in law.

Chaneille and Tyra started this process on 17 March and the training sessions are being held at City law School, London, every Thursday evening, culminating in the Final which will take place at the Supreme Court on April 26th.  The Final will be judged by Lord Neuberger, who is the President of the UK Supreme Court.

Chaneille explains the pressure they are under, “It’s full on.  We were thrown in the deep end straight away, having to analyse a case, research other similar cases to back our arguments up, and present our case.  It’s a fantastic experience.”  Tyra adds, “It is all very formal, we are learning very quickly when and how to address people in the court, using My Lord and My Lady.  It’s much harder than it looks on the TV.  It’s a great experience for me though as I want to go into Family Law.”
