BTEC Medical Science students recently visited the Millennium Seed Bank at Wakehurst Place, looking at the importance of plants in everyday life.  Wakehurst is the country estate of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and it is leased from the National Trust and is managed by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.  Opened by Prince Charles in 2000, the aim of the seed bank is to conserve seeds from the world’s plant species, providing an insurance policy against the extinction of plants in the wild.

BTEC Medical Science student, Amy Francis found the trip very interesting.  “We observed the laboratories and the scientist in action as well as the vast vaults, where they dry out and store all the seeds.  It was intriguing and really useful for our Biology course.”
