On Friday 11 May, Coulsdon College students were fortunate to have their first mandarin class, taught to them via an interactive link live from Beijing. The 25 minute lesson was part of the build up to a Humanities trip to Beijing, happening in February 2019.
Chinese teacher Jining used a live link to teach the A Level history students while they sat in class. They learnt some key phrases which they can use on their trip. The lesson also included a quiz on Chinese history and culture. By the end of the session, all the students were able to introduce themselves in mandarin.
History teacher Ivan Tomb who pioneered the live lesson said, ‘This was a great opportunity for students to gain valuable skills to use in February. It was also breaking down the barriers of distance learning, by being able to have a mandarin lesson live from Beijing.’
The lessons will be picked up again in the autumn term as students prep for their Beijing tour in February 2019.
