Pride Month is an annual celebration that takes place during the month of June, to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York, June 1969 – a tipping point for the LGBTQ+ community as people fought back in response to police violence during a raid of gay bar, Stonewall Inn. Pride is about people and communities coming together in celebration, protest, solidarity and to remember those who have fought for equal rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

Society has become more inclusive since the 1960s but oppression towards the LGBTQ+ community is still widespread, and Pride Month offers an opportunity to increase visibility and support for LGBTQ+ people.

The Croydon College Group are committed to a policy of equal opportunities which means that no one is treated differently for reasons of gender, age, ethnic or national origins, colour, religion, sexual orientation, gender identification or disability.

Pride Month is a time for us all to stand together in solidarity, in celebration of what we have achieved and the progress we have made, but more importantly in recognition of the need for further change. Pride Month is a time for the LGBTQ+ community and allies to continue to raise awareness of the inequalities and discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ communities around the world and campaign for equal rights and freedoms for all.

Students at the Croydon College group will be doing their bit this month by taking part in a range of activities to celebrate the achievements made by the community, but also raise awareness of the discrimination that is still occurring. They will be able to show their support by wearing stickers and badges, take part in fun activities for a chance to win some prizes, and attend talks and workshops to educate themselves on the importance of Pride and the meaning of discrimination.

Michael Clarke, Student Experience Officer said, ‘Pride is a celebration of the achievements of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as a time to raise awareness of the challenges and stigma the LGBTQ+ community faces. As a diverse college with a vibrant and active LGBTQ+ community, we are proud to offer a range fun and insightful activities, including live music, displays, a presentation, and an opportunity to write to your younger self. All students are encouraged to take part, and to recognize the impact LGBTQ+ people have had in the world’.
