Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a nationally recognised qualification for young people in the UK. It involves a challenging programme of activities designed to encourage students to learn new skills, help others and experience adventure.

Employers and universities see the award as evidence of a student’s positive commitment and qualities. Therefore, it is no surprise that the College is a large provider of the scheme, with many students from each year group undertaking the award each year.

The Award at Coulsdon College

At Coulsdon College, students have the opportunity to sign up for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, designed for young people aged 16-25 years of age. Students can do the Silver Award without having done the Bronze Award (the College does not offer the Bronze programme).

Completing the Award requires a great deal of commitment for between 12 and 18 months, but brings a great sense of personal achievement. Students need to complete five different sections: Service, Skills, Physical Recreation, Expedition and Residential.

  • Service. To get involved in a project that helps the environment, individuals, the community or all three.
  • Skills. To discover and develop personal interests, such as learning a new language, musical instrument or artistic skill.
  • Physical Recreation. To participate and improve in some form of dance, sport or physical fitness.
  • Expedition. To encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery. (Training includes activities such as camp-craft, navigation, route planning and first-aid), with practice expeditions usually in the Ashdown Forest and Brecon Beacons and the final expedition on Dartmoor.
  • Residential (Gold only). To broaden a student’s experience through involvement with others in a shared activity away from home, in a residential setting for 5 days and 4 nights.

Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is entirely voluntary, however once a student registers with the College’s Award Unit, a consistent level of commitment is required. Experience has shown that students who leave the College with the majority of sections completed are far more likely to go on and finish the Award.

Timetable for the Award

Students registering for the Award will undertake expedition training in their first year, so that they complete the expedition before their final exams.

Costs

There is an ‘entry’ cost which covers the cost of the Record Book (that all participants are expected to keep up-to-date).

Students are also expected to cover their own expedition costs and any additional costs that may be incurred while completing specific sections e.g. travel etc.
