Geography – A Level
Geography encourages students to understand their own lives in an increasingly globalised world and to understand vital, complex and inter-related issues such as global systems and governance,natural hazards and their impact on people
and changing places. Topics will include water and carbon cycles, hazards, coastal systems and landscapes, global systems and global governance, changing places and contemporary urban environments.
Five GCSEs grade 9-4 and a satisfactory school reference.Including English Language at grade 5, maths at grade 5, Core and Additional Science at grade 4 and Geography, if taken, at grade 5 as a minimum.
Geography students explore both Human and Physical topics and understand how their actions relate to the wider world. They will conduct geographical fieldwork and research, develop geographical skills, and gain confidence in working with statistical techniques. Physical topics include Tectonic hazards and processes, Coastal landscapes and change, the water cycle, water insecurity, the carbon cycle, and energy insecurity. Human topics include Globalization, Regenerating Places, Superpowers, Geopolitics, Health, Human Rights, and Intervention. The A Level course includes university taster days to Royal Holloway and a compulsory field trip within the UK, which is essential for exam preparation and coursework.
Many students pursue a degree in Geography or a related subject. Geographers are valued by employers for their skills in literacy, numeracy, IT, spatial awareness, teamwork, and problem analysis. Geography is an excellent facilitating subject for various professional careers, including Environmental Management, Business and Marketing, Planning, International Relations, and Geographical Information Systems. Teachers can provide guidance to students on university entry and careers related to the environment or geography.
The A Level consists of 20% coursework and 80% examination, with three papers taken in the summer term.
